Is a good David Bowie song although that doesn’t have anything to do with what I’m about to say now.

A lot has changed since I started this site and it has gone through a couple of changes.
Now because I’ve changed, naturally, and because it’s become clearer of what I do, how I do it and how I want to do it I need to change the way I live online.

To make my thought-process clearer let me explain. Originally when I made this site I thought the following: Because I do so many different things and I value all of them equally it’d be great to have a website without weighing more focus on one or the other thing that I do. You can see the flaw in that but I couldn’t back then.

Now since then, a lot has indeed changed. My client-base has grown and with every month I feel the pressure for a more professional fassade. That’s why I’ve now decided to split the different things which I do into three things.

There’s my personal stuff which will stay here on my site as a kind of blog/compository of drawings and personal projects.

Then there is my Webdesign operation which will be hosted on a different site. (Name and Branding to come…)

And my one-mane Animation studio called Painted Film

Oh well. This is it so far.
I’ll post more when the time is ripe!

This is a test from Zobeide, my current personal project and 2nd year film at the Royal College of Arts (MA Animation).
The animation takes the book ‘Invisible Cities’ by Italo Calvino as a starting point but aims to wander off into a completely different direction. If you’d like to give any feedback, please let me know how it makes you feel!

The Road To Recovery

About a year ago I had the honor of being asked by Latimer Creative Media to create an Animation for BEAT, an organization helping people suffering from eating disorders. I’ve always thought of my Animation-Practice as something quite artsy and very personal, something that I wouldn’t do professionally but only for myself.

My first reaction to the job-offer was kind of like this: Well you can have a look at my Animation Portfolio but I doubt you’ll find that my style suits your needs.

I was convinced that they wouldn’t use me, because my work to me seemed the opposite of what you’re used to, but in fact, we made it, and we did quite well. The reactions that I had from viewers so far was quite touching!

It’s been 4 years in this place now. London that is. Doesn’t feel like it at all, but now and then something reminds me that time is passing pretty quickly. I have just dug out an old DVD with some stuff on it that I have been working on. This was my first attempt at making a flash website:

August 2010 has been a pretty good summer for me. But the week I spent in Vienna portraying my cousin and her boyfriend has been a highlight. After a couple of days of preparation, which included getting to know each other a lot better and producing a couple of quick sketches I finally arrived at painting this double-portrait.
It was painted (Oil on Canvas) in two consecutive nights while the models were sleeping on their living-room couch.

I carry my Sketchbook to everywhere I go, it gives me space to think about my surroundings, any drawings are a record of thought, and as such I present to you some extracts of my diary. To be earnest about my thoughts, I tried to pick a couple of drawings that don’t show off how polished an artwork I can produce because that can be seen elsewhere on this site, I hope that they give to some extent an impression of how I think and what is worthwile to me in drawing.

Among these sketches are some from gigs of the great Benjamin Folke Thomas, short accounts of the “Future of Webdesign Conference” that was in London, and sketches I did while on the underground.

Have you heard of Mr.Doob?

Wow, have you heard of Mr. Doob yet? Probably one of the most prolific experimental developers I have come across. This is his blog: Mr Doob and this is the javascript programm I have drawn that image with: Harmony. This is all done with Javascript, there’s no flash drawing-api involved. Not that I have much clue about this but my guess is that it’s a hell of a lot of work! Worth having a look at! Other little programs include a zoom-scroller (which works with 3d glasses), a flash based 3d racing-game and loads of amazing html5 canvas projects.

Posters for Kim and Big Man

I had the honour to create two posters for latimer creative media and st.michaels fellowship. In their bid to change the world they quite recently produced 2 films, together with young people from the local community. I must confess I haven’t seen Big Man yet, but Kim was a drama of the highest grade! Highly entertainable and yet serving a good cause, which you’ll hear more about soon (I think I can’t give away too much just yet), I hope there’ll be a public screening! Here are the posters and some details of them.

It’s based on wordpress this year and should be a lot easier to maintain and to navigate!! Because Wordipress is such a nice blogging-tool, that’s what I’m gonna do, I’ll start blogging. And thus hopefully updating my website a bit more.

I did quite a lot recently which I haven’t documented here just yet, the results of workshops at the rca, my free-improvisation sessions with my brother and at the niu imaginarium as well as loads of sketchbookwork. I’ll blog here quite often in the future, so please do check on my website and comment the crap out of it!

Oh by the way, the homepage is completely w3c valid, the post pages would be as well, if it wasn’t for the bloody facebook iframe button. Oh well, anyway, let me know if you have any troubles with this site in your browser!

Hoerfest 2010

Exciting! This is the third time that I designed the web-presence and all print materials for the Hoerfest. As time goes by, both of us have grown. I have gotten better at Webdesign, and the Hoerfest’s significance is expanding. As a partner of the german Avantgarde Festival (which is by the way organized by none other than Jean Herve Peron from Faust, which also performed at the Hoerfest in 2007) it is now the biggest festival for Avantgarde music in Austria.

The Waldorf School of SW-London

The Waldorf School in South West London is a wonderful environment for children. It deserved a website that enables people to at least glance a glimpse of the amazing things that happen at this school, that’s why I volunteered to make one. It is an ongoing webdesign-project, built with wordpress and made to contain many different facets of the school. It also has a members-section that is only accessible to parents and teachers.

The Art Book

After graduating from Middlesex University the Art Book approached me and Daniel Fairbairn to redesign the Art Book. Together with Steven Barritt, a fantastic developer, we recreated the Art Book. Complete with all Illustrations that The Art Book is in posession of, a catalogue of the old books in the form of interactive flash-books, a search engine for the images, and profiles for each agent and artist that is represented on The Art Book.

Absem, an SEO-company, asked me to touch up their wordpress theme. I pitched for the job but made the mistake of not asking how big their budget was, thinking that, an SEO-company would have the appropriate budget. It is quite ridiculous what people sometimes expect! I was quite inexperienced back then, but still, isn’t it offensive if a client tries to rip you off?

My first Estate Agent experience

This was quite an ambitious project but I thought I’d give it a try. Who knows, it might be an interesting job I thought, maybe a new area to break in to, soon should I learn one of the most important lessons as a freelancer.

The client didn’t appreciate any of the work, and when I after 3 redesigns completed the website, he wanted a refund. The whole process was to sum it up, quite painful. But the design is not that bad is it? And for the budget that I had, which was minor, I even got steven barritt to develop this neat dependable category search tool, which I now had to pay out of my own pocket. You live and learn, and thankfully I had a lot better clients soon afterwards!

Dubs is a great illustrator whom I met at Abbeville Feet. I remember saying hello and one of the first things she said was: Are you a webdesigner? Yes I am, and I enjoyed working with her a lot.

Her quirky watercolour/ink drawings are beautiful and I tried to push the drawings into the foreground as much as I could without loosing useability.

Hoerfest 2008

This was the second time I have designed everything for the Hoerfest, a festival for contemporary classical and experimental music.
The deadline for this project was very tight yet I tried out something new, I simply used my handwriting here, for everything, a design-doodle. This might be a bit confusing in some places but it certainly made for a very unusual design!
